A Breed Called Shahrukh Khan Fan

Girls, ladies, aunties and grannies – in short women of all age seem to find something very interesting about this joker-like-superstar, which I have always failed to understood, in spite of being a ‘woman’.

In school, college, hostel, office, train, bus, wherever I have met these women, my disrespect for this plastic-faced star has become more and more deep.

In a very general situation when I come across someone new, or when I’m new in a place, very normally I always try to start conversation with them. After getting and giving the answers of the first few customary queries like “where from”, “what mother tongue”, “which college”, “which subject”, “previous work experience”, etc, etc, etc when the chit-chat session starts getting more informal and candid, I occasionally come up with some queries that I like to talk about.

As I ask my question “So what do you do in weekends?”, if the answer comes: “ Ohh, I just want to sleep after the hectic week. Sometime I go to the nearby mall and hang around”….

Me: “Ahem…”
Me: “So what do you do in free time? Do you like to read books?”
The Girl: “Yes I love to read books, but I never get time to read one.”
Me: “Ok, so what’s the last novel you read?”
The Girl: “Actually I bought ‘One Night at Call Center’ one month back, but I couldn’t even finish its first chapter yet.”
Then I ask abruptly “Are you a Shahrukh Khan fan?”
The Girl: “YES….I LLLOVE HIM. How did you know?”
Me: “Just a guess :)”...... and the conversation continues…..

Yes, just a definite guess. A girl who hangs around in a mall for time pass and prefers to sleep in free time rather than doing any constructive work, can only be fan of those brainless sugar candy romantic cheesy movies.

I have come across hundreds of such girls/women who can’t even tell when the last general election was held in India, or what is the full form of UPA, or the last Indian to receive the Nobel (forget about asking in which field), or anything that relates to society. They seem to be completely ignorant about the nation, state, society and even neighborhood except for the Page3 supplement that comes with daily newspaper. These are the people who do not even think about casting their vote during election but takes pride in saying “politicians sare chor hote hain. India ka kuchh nahi ho sakta”. These are the people who cannot tell the name of a single minister in the parliament, except for the PM’s name. These are the people who go to McDonald’s for lunch, and take pride in doing so. These are the people who never reads the first page of the newspaper or listens to TV news.

No wonder such brainless people can only enjoy the rubbish movies that this star loves to star in. It’s not that he hasn’t attempted doing something ‘meaningful’, thanks to his copy-cat nature. He did appear in Swades, which his honest fan base rejected like a toilet paper saying ‘how dare the director put our (beloved) SRK in a local train, crowded bus and rickety boat!’…what an irony!!!

But this is also fact that I know some super-intelligent girls too who love SRK! This is a mystery for me that how can a normal human brain actually tolerate him in the theatre!!!!

And the fact that what kind of boys/men are Shahrukh Khan fan calls for another debate and I better do not discuss that here.

Hmm.. First of all, SRK is an actor. And if people like him, let them like him. Why label them 'brainless' etc etc? How can we judge people mere from their likings and dislikings?

And apart from that, its cruel to expect everyone to be able to appear for the general knowledge examinations. You cannot expect everyone to come with the information like the last general elections, the full form of UPA, or the last Indian to receive the Nobel etc. It depends upon so many things. Their age, education, upbringing, maturity levels, social understanding etc etc are too much influential for people's thoughts.

Well, there may be another side of the story. People's maturity varies with taste and age. You are referring to youngsters who are following a very popular film actor. You have to admit that film culture is considered to be for mass than for class. Anyway, films being easily appealing to almost anyone and everyone, people from all kinds of background tend to follow them. And most importantly even school going kids also start to like and follow these actors. Unless you have a rough idea about the age, background, education, philosophy, mentality of the responding person, I don't think you can be (or rather say, should be) judgmental about him/her. Give them some time to mature and probably you won't listen to such craps from them again.

But I also agree that there are some people who are mature enough considering their age and education and still come up with such craps. You cannot do much to them. But I also believe that they can also be influenced to change their views on certain topics. You have to be patient, be friends with them and then only you can influence their thought with your one.

So, if you think something is wrong somewhere, don't complain about that. Instead, go ahead and try to change that. Influence some more people to join your mission and one day probably you won't complain any more.

You were reading the words you wrote and I wrote the words you wrote and I read the write up you wrote for which the best reply were the words you wrote and still you didn't realize that the words you wrote were actually the words you wrote and thought that the words you wrote were the words I wrote but now I've told you that the words you wrote were actually the words you wrote so by now you know that the words you wrote are the words you wrote so don't bash me thinking that the words I wrote were the words I wrote because I've already told you that the words I wrote were the words you wrote, so enjoy.

I agree with "hmm" that you can't be so judgemental about people so as to label them 'brainless' etc just because they don't do what you would categorize as "time put to good use".
On a different note, though I'm not SRK fan, I loved Swades and Chak De!. Regarding reading books, it's a dying art despite the craze surrounding the Potter series. I know many people who love to boast themselves as "book lovers", have shelves full of the recent and popular titles and yet don't know a thing about the titles that adorn their bookshelves. And the icing on the cake-they won't let you touch, leave aside borrow, those books coz you'll spoil the neat cover (which has been kept neat till date as no one has read the book)....What a pity!!!

Dear S, I don't know you personally, but thank you so much for agreeing with me :-) Thank you so much. It is nice to see that there is someone, at least, who is agreeing with your thoughts! Thanks. :-)

Neither I am a fan of SRK (or fan of any movie heroes, for that matter), nor do I have much intelligence. But it does not take an Einstein to see that you're biased, friend Doell. And you know, the problem with being biased is that a lot of people will choose to turn a deaf ear to your words even if you're saying facts like that we can't survive without oxygen. So, please, when you comment on something so big (you can hardly deny the amount of business goes on on the name of SRK, can you), please try to show off some neutrality.

Please do not misunderstand me, I do support your view whole-heartedly, and I hate the cream perhaps more than you -- there is a class difference issue. But All I saw in in your writing is raw hatred. Almost personal. Now, if something is so financially successful as that guy, I'd think twice before I vent anything out on him so venomously, shouldn't I?

@ Dashu Pagla: Sorry to say, sir, but almost same goes for you, too. A person like you must know already that nothing good can come out of sarcasm -- except maybe more sarcasm from the opponent. We can't throw mud at each other till judgment day, can we, now?

Hi,

I am not a fan of SRK....but I agree with Hmm.....Liking-disliking is personal and it does not have any connection with brain....and yes spending time with movies, malls instead of books is again a personal choice....what I feel is u can demand that spending time with good books, having knowledge of current affairs or not liking SRK are good habits....but cant balme all who dont do that.....I still believe watching movies like "Mr. and Mrs Iyer" or "Bong Connection" or many more good movies is much more worth than reading a book like "One Night at Call Center"....Sorry if I hurt any one's personal grudges :-P
