Need Some tips on TIPS

As they say, the tip payable to waiters should be 10% of the total bill, I have always tried to maintain this sincerely if not religiously. I remember my first independent venture to a restaurant when I was a student and living on pocket money and was reluctant to pay any extra money to the restaurant. But there are some cases when I NEVER make any tip is when I am getting fast food from McDonald, Domino's and KFC counters. To be honest, I just don't like going to these international food chains and just hate spending money on the glorified bread items. I just love to eat anything and everything from street side vendors and I am not a health conscious at all (well, people knowing me must agree to that!). But there are occasions when I cannot be indifferent to the wishes of my companions.

There are situation also when I actually take up my mobile, call Domino's and ask for a Pizza! Well, what is the better way to escape half an hour sweaty kitchen adventure and still please a Pizza-loving-friend? Now the confusion arises when the delivery boy arrives, yes, as promised just within half an hour. If the the Pizza costs 185/-(my pizza always costs less as I am pucca vegetarian when it comes to taste food from outside), I give him 200/- and just ask him to keep the change. One day as I was busy over a phone just un-mindfully I asked for the change and the boy gave me a blank look saying he doesn't have any change. I let him go.

The question struck me just after that. What if I never planned to give tips like a lot of people do? Then also I would have been compelled to give that amount as there was 'change' problem and you just cannot afford to have that much change in hand. Then what is tips actually? I thought, it was supposed to be given to the waiters out of expectation! Something that are not payable officially! But, everybody has started to include that in the bill itself! Its official now!! So I need some tips on Tips!!!
